Our Church: Roots and Fruits

Sunday School beginnings:

Miss Betty Vaught arrived in Hong Kong on January 15, 1971. The pastor of the

Tai Po Baptist Church at that time, Rev. Peter Leong, met her at the airport. He invited

her to teach an English language Sunday school class. The class began soon after that.

It averaged about 10 to 15 for several years. Some names we would recognize of that

first class are: Thomas Tsang, and Kin and Suen Lam. The pastors of the Tai Po

Baptist Church were encouraging to the English language class. Various missionaries

were invited to preach.

It was a struggle, from the beginning, to let people who were outside the church, to

know of the class. However, a core group was forming within the class. Early on,

several were saved and baptized: Chanky, Nancy, Clinton, and Carolyn Chong, along

with Thomas Lam.

Move to Fu Heng:

In 1991, the class moved to Fu Heng and became a ¡§preaching point¡¨ of the

Mother Church. At this time, the attendance was about thirty-five each Sunday.

Betty Vaught was ordained as a deacon of the Tai Po Baptist Church in August 1992.

Marvin Bond was also recognized as a deacon in 1994. After we moved, our attendance

increased gradually.

First Pastor:

Dr. Joshua Wong became pastor in the fall of 1993. His two sons, Allan and Art,

were soon saved and baptized. On Sunday, January 6, 1994, the ¡§preaching point¡¨

became an official chapel of the Tai Po Baptist Church.

Second Pastor:

On March 7, 1995, Jim West was installed as the new pastor. Since that date, we have

received sixteen by transfer and twenty-seven by baptism, ten of whom have been by

conversion.

Third Pastor:

On August 1, 2007, Jerry Moye was installed as the new pastor.

Deacons are selected:

On August 20, 2000, Oi Lun Chow and Dennis Wong were ordained. Due to special

family needs, the Chows returned to England. With similar reasons, Dennis Wong

moved to live on the HK island, and thus began attending and serving in a church nearby.

Then on February 9, 2003, Tom Wong was ordained as Deacon.  Our latest deacon,

Vicky Lam was ordained on August 15, 2009.

From English Chapel to Tai Po International Baptist Church

Fu Heng English Chapel was officially registered with the Companies Registry on

30 June 2003 to become a legally independent church. From then on the Chapel has

been known as the ¡§Tai Po International Baptist Church¡¨.

The Retirement of Pastor Jim West

After 10 years of service as a pastor at the Church, Pastor Jim West retired officially on

March27, 2005 and returned to his home country, the USA, on 2 May 2005 together with

his wife.
